El incidente se produjo poco antes de que el vuelo, en el que viajaban 278 pasajeros y 10 miembros de la tripulación, aterrizara en Honolulu tras despegar de Phoenix el domingo.

Jon Snook, director de operaciones de la aerolínea, declaró que ésta no había experimentado "un incidente de esta naturaleza en su historia reciente".

Un total de 36 personas recibieron tratamiento por cortes, incluso en la cabeza, así como por golpes y contusiones. Algunas personas tuvieron náuseas y vomitaron como consecuencia del movimiento extremo, según las autoridades.

De los heridos, al menos una persona quedó inconsciente, pero todos los pacientes estaban despiertos y hablaban cuando llegaron a los hospitales, dijo Jim Ireland, director de los Servicios Médicos de Emergencia de Honolulu.

"Nos sentimos afortunados de que no haya habido muertos ni heridos graves. Y también tenemos muchas esperanzas de que todos se recuperen y se repongan por completo", declaró el Sr. Ireland.

Según Snook, tres auxiliares de vuelo fueron trasladados a hospitales.

Thomas Vaughan, meteorólogo del Servicio Meteorológico Nacional en Honolulu, dijo que en el momento del incidente había un aviso meteorológico de tormentas que incluía Oahu y zonas que habrían incluido la trayectoria del vuelo.
