Según Live Science, AR3165 emitió unas ocho erupciones solares que provocaron algunos apagones de radio en el océano Atlántico.

Una potente ráfaga de viento solar abrió una grieta en la atmósfera de la Tierra, lo que podría provocar una tormenta geomagnética.

No se preocupe, esto no es el tipo de cosa que va a provocar el apocalipsis -aunque eso podría ser un alivio en estos días-, pero es un acontecimiento científico interesante.

También es bastante complicado, así que probablemente tendrá que tener un poco de paciencia con nosotros.

Según la Administración Nacional Oceánica y Atmosférica de Estados Unidos (NOAA), una tormenta geomagnética se define como "una perturbación importante de la magnetosfera de la Tierra que se produce cuando hay un intercambio muy eficiente de energía del viento solar al entorno espacial que rodea la Tierra".

Estos [sucesos] son el resultado de variaciones en el viento solar que producen cambios importantes en las corrientes, plasmas y campos de la magnetosfera terrestre".

Así pues, las tormentas geomagnéticas de clase G1 -la clase causada por esta última ráfaga de viento solar- no son dañinas para los humanos, pero pueden afectar a los sistemas de satélites que rondan nuestro planeta, así como a la infraestructura energética.

Aún no está claro de dónde procede la ráfaga que se cruzó con la Tierra el lunes, pero es bastante probable que proceda de una eyección de masa coronal (CME).

Una eyección de masa coronal se produce cuando el Sol emite una gran cantidad de radiación de alta energía.

Es posible que haya oído hablar de una erupción solar, y eso es más o menos de lo que estamos hablando aquí.

Estas erupciones chocan contra el campo magnético de la Tierra, provocando lo que llamamos "tormentas solares".

Esta eyección de masa en concreto parece provenir de una mancha solar llamada AR3165, que es una zona enorme de la superficie del sol.

Evidentemente, el Sol tiene una masa insondable, pero las manchas solares son zonas oscuras de la fotosfera causadas por "un intenso flujo magnético que surge de las profundidades del interior del Sol", según la NOAA.

También podrían venir más tormentas.

SpaceWeather informa de que el 21 de diciembre podrían producirse más tormentas geomagnéticas de clase G1 debido a un "par de corrientes de viento solar paralelas" que azotarán el campo magnético de nuestro planeta.

Y añaden: "El material gaseoso fluye desde un doble agujero en la atmósfera solar".
